October 6 is the day North American hoops fans who love video games have been waiting for as both NBA Live 10 and NBA 2K10 are released today. In honor of HVGR day and because I learned how to play the Super Mario Brother's Theme on the piano last week, I started having some deep thoughts. First, what is the meaning of life, and second, which NBA player would each classic Super Mario character be? Here's what I came up with for the second:

  • Bowser = Shaquille O'Neal – The big badass King Koopa Bowser doesn't come out to wreak havoc very often, but when he does you remember it. Similar to Shaq at this stage in his career

  • Donkey Kong = Dwight Howard - D12 is not as physically big as Shaq/Bowser, but he's still pretty badass in his own right

  • Princess Peach = Vince Carter – They both cry a lot and are fragile as hell. If only VC played for a team with pink uniforms...
  • Toad = T.J Ford - A quick little whippersnapper who means well and tries hard, but always seems to get physically beat down.

  • Yoshi = Pau Gasol - Long necked, willing sidekick.

  • Wario = Ron Artest – Both are just plain crazy.

Wario

  • Luigi = Kobe Bryant – he's up there with Old Mario (Jordan) and current Mario (see below), but for one reason or another, he'll never be as popular as Mario (Maybe Luigi was in Colorado and...). Hmmm, it seems both Yoshi and Luigi play for the Lakers, but both characters are green... Maybe Yoshi could be KG and Luigi could be Paul Pier- … Never mind...

  • Mario = LeBron James – Both are worldwide icons. And it seems in the NBA, Bowser and Mario play on the same team! That would be a potent tandem in the Mario universe, will it be so in the NBA? If the Cavs start steamrolling teams, I think evil Bowser music should start playing whenever they take the court in opposing arenas. Mamma mia!
