DJ Plaeboi & Hoop Heads North: Q&A style

Plaeboi

In case you haven't heard of this fine gentleman Tristan 'T.K.' Thorpe, better known as DJ Plaeboi, is one half of the multiple award winning dj tandem, 4Plae. As a 5-time Stylus Award winner he's opened for various hip hop artists & DJs; both legends (KRS-One, Nas, and Afrika Bambaataa for example) and up & coming artists alike. If you haven't had the chance to check out his skills on the '1s & 2s' you can check out some of his past live-to-air broadcasts and podcasts here. Trust me, you will love the mixes!

He is definitely of my favourite DJs, so it was only right that we connect with him to chat and get his thoughts about various issues dealing with music & sports.

We always like to show love to our people who are representing Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Canada in a major way. He's even heading to South Beach this week to spin at some Super Bowl parties! "Niiiiice!" (c) Fabolous

Check out the Q&A we recently did with the one and only, DJ Plaeboi:

HHN: When did you first start DJing, and when did you first realize this was something that you truly had a love for?

Plaeboi: I started djing when I was around the age of 13/14. I found my interest in djing once I heard some old Funkmaster Flex tapes and kind of took it from there. I think I realized I had a true passion for it when music was all I could think of.

HHN:  I know you're an NBA fan, but do you have a favourite team? Also, who are your top 5 players of all time? Feel free to elaborate as to why :)

Plaeboi: I love sports except NASCAR (cough, cough). As for my favourite team in the NBA. I swear it switches from year to year. This year I'm choosing the Raptors.

My top 5 players of all time. Hmmm.
In no particular order I'd have to say:
Michael Jordan. Earvin 'Magic' Johnson. Dwayne Wade. Kobe Bryant. Kevin Garnett.

Michael Jordan: His skill. Thought process of the game and Space Jam.

Magic Johnson: Well he was honored as one of the 50 greatest players in the nba a couple years back. We can't forget about what he brought to the game as well as the crazy games between The Lakers and Celtics. I also forgot to mention how he could rock the Purple and Yellow knee high socks!

Dwayne Wade: When I watch him play he reminds me of Jordan in some attributes. He just has this crazy finesse when he plays each game.

Kobe Bryant: I'll be honest. I didn't like him that much when he first came into the NBA. The reason why I put him on the top 5 list is because he has changed his game from when he started and to how it is now. The guy has super skill but more importantly he moves the ball around and takes charge of his team and has developed himself into a leader.

Kevin Garnett: I just like watching him play. Even when he's not playing his support to his team when he's on the bench is like no other. His intensity is unmatched I think.

HHN: So, in a short amount of time the DJing world has almost exclusively shifted to Serato's Scratch Live software and the use of Notebook & Macbooks (and it makes sense!) as opposed to carrying around wax, or binders of CDs. Do you feel technology has been more of a gift, or a curse when it comes to the art of DJing?

Plaeboi: I think its both. The reason being is because now anyone out there can now consider themself a "DJ" when they download music. I was fortunate enough to start DJing when you had to carry records around, call record companies to get music. I think todays upcoming DJs should have to experience some of that so they can appreciate the Serato era more.

HHN: If you could liken any NBA player (past or present) to your style of DJing, who would it be?

Plaeboi: It would have to be Kevin Garnett. Just the similarities that I observe for his love for basketball applies to my love for music.

HHN: It's great to see new Canadian artists like Melanie Fiona, Drake, Rhea (N.E.R.D.) making big splashes on the American and International music scene and having success (Grammy nominations, magazine covers and features, primetime live TV performances, etc.). The record industry is such a complicated world. Established artists always looking for new labels to record and make new music for the masses. Do you think Canada is finally on the map to stay in the minds of those 'south of the border' with regards to R&B & Hip Hop?

Plaeboi: I hope so. We have so much talent up here is crazy and I'm glad that this attention is finally coming our way. The cool thing about it is that everyone up here can be apart of that attention especially if you're a fan of someones music' show them support. The more support one gets the attention goes hand in hand with that.

HHN: You're going to be heading to Super Bowl XLIV in MIA this coming week! Can you gve the readers a preview of some of the parties you'll be rocking while you're in town? Also, what's your prediction for the game?

Plaeboi: Yeah I'm super excited to go back down to Florida again. I'll be going down there to do a couple shows with some old school artists like Rob Base, DJ Kevski and a R&B show with Kyle Rifkin. As for the outcome of the game...I honestly don't know and am hoping its not a huge blow out for either team. But if I were to make a decision I'd have to say The Saints.

HHN: The Toronto Raptors are currently sitting in 5th spot in the Eastern Conference, with a favourable schedule in front of them leading up to the All-Star break. How far do you think the Raptors can go in the post-season. Do you believe if the Raptors continue to have success like they have over the past month that it be enough to convince Chris Bosh to re-sign with the Raptors this summer?

Plaeboi: Wow...I would think Chris Bosh would stay. He is the face of the Raptors plus they've finally built a decent team around him so he should stay. Plus his parties in Toronto are siiiiiick. I'd stay for that reason alone. I also think that the Raptors have it in them to get to the playoffs.

Be sure to check out his hilarious blog called the 'Viral Mixtape' and if you want to connect with him, you can follow him on Twitter or hit him up on Facebook.
