Spurs Attend Class At Roko U

ROKO B WARE!

For those of you unable to catch the game last night, you missed a good one (Damn you TSN2!!!!!). I was fortunate enough to witness a "Rudy"-esque underdog makes good story. There were the Raptors, short-handed without Bosh and Calderon, their top two players. Their best player in the last couple games, Joey Graham goes down to injury (shin contusion) and the Spurs big 3 of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili were in top form, combining for 74 of the Spurs' 89 points..

Enter Roko Ukic. He had recently lost his position as regular backup point guard to a non-point guard in Anthony Parker. With Calderon out with a gimpy hamstring, Ukic moved up the depth chart back to backup and boy did he deliver. Roko went 9-13 from the field for 22 points including a late corner 3 and the driving go ahead bucket in the lane to help give the Raptors a 91-89 win over a streaking Spurs team.

In the grand scheme of things, this game didn't mean a whole lot to either team. Sure the Spurs let one get away, but no question they'll be in the thick of the championship hunt come playoff time (after all, it is an odd year). And the Raps will either be lottery bound or squeak into the playoffs only to get destroyed by one of the East's elite teams.

But going forward, the Raps may finally have a reliable backup point guard in Ukic. In addition, Andrea Bargnani, who struggled early, showed a little star potential. He consistently took it to Duncan and the Spurs and down the stretch, did not hesitate to take the big shots. Here's hoping for more efforts like this from the Raps after the All-star break and beyond!

Spurs!

Tonight's matchup: Spurs @ Toronto 7:00 pm EST

The Spurs are a tough team, they can take players like former Raptors, Roger Mason and Matt Bonner and maximize their strengths turning them into quality starters.  I can't think of any other team that can be a consistent championship threat consistently every year besides the Spurs. The Spurs are 34-15 and sit on top of the Southwest division.  The Raptors on the other hand are now 20-34 and are on a one game winning streak beating the Wolves last night.  They look to go into the break on a high note, but ugh....this is gonna be a tough one.

The three of us at Hoop Heads North are thirty somethings that love basketball, we've all had favorite teams before the Raptors were even born. My favorite team growing up has always been the Spurs as I was a big fan of the Admiral. One of my favorite Spurs blogs is Pounding the Rock, and I got to ask David at Pounding The Rock a few questions about the Spurs, the Red Rocket and MC Tony Parker.

HHN: Does San Antonio still have the tools to make another run for the championship? Or do they need to make a move/trade to be competitive in the playoffs?

David (Pounding the Rock): Ah, that's the million-dollar question, isn't it? Spurs fans seem to be split in this regard, although most agree that a trade would be preferable. In addition, our opinions are quite malleable (we are sports fans, after all) and fluctuate as the Spurs improve during this regular season. The consensus is that we're still a step below the Lakers, and that we need to shake things up somehow to make the leap. However, the team has played at a high level in the past month, and the win at Boston was probably the season's summit so far. Do we want to try to fix what isn't broken? Is it worth it to risk the team's excellent chemistry at this point in the season?

THE GREAT NBA DEBATE: Balance Toi vs. Premier Love

Written by Romy Aquino on .

After chatting with David at Pounding the Rock, I had asked him to pick between two Tony Parker songs. Balance Toi vs. Premier Love.

Personally, I prefer Balance Toi for the pure fact it's a pure club banger. David preferred Premier Love, Pourquoi? You get to see Tony's soulful eyes.

It's a great debate, check the evidence and post your opinion.

Tony Parker - Balance Toi

Tony Parker - Premier Love

J.O. Had Love Locked Down

JO

Raptors 110, Timberwolves 102

In a preview of this year's NBA Finals, the Toronto Raptors took on the Minnesota Timberwolves.....ahem, ok ok...not the most exciting matchup last night as it was a battle between two lower tier teams without their star players.  But it was a big game for both the Raptors and Wolves where the Raptors were looking to end a 6-game losing streak and this was Minnesota's first game time to shine without their star, Al Jefferson.

The Minnesota Timberwolves who were thin upfront, had the youg rookie Kevin Love guarding J.O.  Love could not contain Jermaine O'Neal in the closing minutes as he took advantage of the matchup,  putting away the Woves.

THE GOODS
  • Joey Graham started out strong with 11 pts and 3 rebounds in the first quarter
  • The Raptors led 23-16 after the first holding the Timberwolves to 33% shooting
  • After a bad second quarter, the Raps got it going as Jason Kapono hit some big threes to get within one
  • Great fourth quarter by the Raps outscoring the Wolves 37-22 as their strategy of feeding the ball down low to J.O. paid off
  • J.O. got points in the paint to get up 104-96 and then another basket to get up 106-98
  • Joey Graham and J.O. played some big minutes, 38 and 42 minutes respectively to lead the Raps
  • Jason Kapono had 18 points off ot the bench to help the Raps rally back into the game after trailing to the Wolves
  • J.O. finished with 22 points & 8 rebounds
  • Joey Graham tied his career high with 24 points along with 6 rebounds
  • Raps shot 53% from the floor and had 31 bench points vs. the Wolves' 14
THE BADS
  • The Timberwolves went on a 15-2 run in the second with Ryan Gomes nailing a three to get up 42-41
  • The Wolves led 48-41 at the half, Randy Foye had a good first half with 17 pts
  • Wolves outscored the Raptors 32-18 in the second quarter
  • Randy Foye finished with 33 points and 8 rebounds, which was a career high
  • All of the Wolves starters were in double figures
  • In other bad news, Chris Bosh decided to sit out this year's all-star game due to injury, he was replaced by Cleveland's Mo Williams

Jefferson! The Chris Bosh-less Raptors are back in action tonight, taking on the Al Jefferson-less Minnesota Timberwolves at Minnesota tonight.

The Wolves suffered a big blow on Sunday as Al Jefferson had to leave the game with a season-ending torn ACL in the right knee. Al Jefferson was averaging 23 pts and 11 rebounds.

To preview tonight's Raptors-Wolves game, I got a chance to ask College Wolf at our brother Bloguin site, Twolves Blog a few questions about the Wolves and tonight's matchup.

HHN: Without using expletives, how angry were Wolves fans when Al Jefferson wasn't named to the All-Star team?

College Wolf (TWolves Blog):
I think the general consensus was that yes, most Wolves fans were pretty peeved that Big Al got passed over for the likes of an over the hill Shaq and less than spectacular David West. And I don’t really think you can blame the fans for believing Al should have been selected, especially since Kevin Love had been snubbed in the Rookie-Sophomore just mere days earlier. Personally, I never thought that Al was going to get selected, namely because of the Wolves terrible sub .500 record. Statistically, Jefferson can certainly make the case as being one of the best post players in the entire NBA. He’s one of only three players averaging at least 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. His defense is sub-par, which hurts him, but it’s not like there aren’t other all-stars that don’t play defense. Unfortunately, the Western Conference is loaded with worthy players, most of which are on winning teams. In the eyes of the coaches, winning records tend to trump statistics when it comes to All-Star selection (unless of course we are talking about the 3 sub .500 Eastern Conference selections this year.)

SUCKA FREE 8: Who didn't suck in the NBA last week

Written by Romy Aquino on .

kobe pau

Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers didn't suck
Last week: 35.5 ppg, 5.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists
What more can I say? 61 points against the Knicks breaking a Madison Square garden record, Kobe help lead the Lakers beat the Cavs to hand them their first home loss and on their six game road trip? Kobe's Lakers are 6-0 on their road trip. If you haven't watched Kobe score 61, you can watch all 61 here.

Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers didn't suck
Last week: 26 ppg, 13.8rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1 steal, 1.5 blocks
Pau was honored as the Western Conference Play of the week. Pau had two 30point games against the Toronto Raptors and the New York Knicks and he also had doubledigit rebounding numbershis last four games.

Stephen Jackson of the Golden State Warriors didn't suck
Last week: 26 ppg, 7 rebounds, 8.8 assists, 2.5 steals
Jackson had a triple double against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday with 30ppg, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. In the Warriors' game against Utah, he flirted with another one with 20 pts, 10 boards and 8 assists as they beat the Jazz 116-96.

Ramon Sessions of the Milwaukee Bucks didn't suck
Last week: 31.5 ppg, 4 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals
Ramon has no problem filling in for Michael Redd, Sessions dropped 44 pts and12 assists against the Pistons. The Bucks are on the playoff hunt sitting a half a game outside of the eighth spot in the East.

The Los Angeles Lakers didn't suck
Last week: Won 6 in a row
I hate plugging the Lakers here all the time but the Lakers are getting it done. Look at the reasons above withKobe Bryant and Player of the Week, Pau Gasol. They hold 41-9 record and even with the loss of Andrew Bynum, the Lakers have kept it up, going 6-0 on their road trip beating powerhouses like the Cavs at home and the world champ, Boston Celtics.

NBA's Greatest Ugliest Games: February 7, 2009, Memphis Grizzlies vs. Toronto Raptors

"Puzzling." - Matt Devlin, Raptors play by play

"Is this defense so good or is this offense this bad?" - Jack Armstrong, Raptors color commentator

"We played a beautiful ugly game. If this is a beauty contest, pigs should be in it, because it sure is dirty looking"- Lionel Hollins, Memphis Grizzlies coach

Synopsis: In either a highly defensive game or a really ugly offensive game, the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors shot an astounding 53-156 for a combined 34% shooting percentage. The Memphis Grizzlies held the Toronto Raptors to 29% shooting but even with the abismal shooting from the Raptors, the Grizzlies proved to be just as bad as the Raptors managed to stay in the game.

With the score 43-35 at halftime, it proved to be one of the most entertaining boring games of the season.

Last night's game displayed some of the worst offensive performances from the Toronto Raptors starters:

Andrea Bargnani went 1-11
Anthony Parker shot 2-10
Jermaine O'Neal shot 2-9

In horrible performances from both teams, the highlight of the night was a performance from the Grizzlies Dancin' Grannies

The only decent showing from the night was OJ Mayo who scored 12 points in the fourth quarter including a corner three to put the game out of reach for the Raps.

The Serbian Assassin

Ok, wonder how the Hornets won last night? Here's 15 reasons:

  1. Peja Stojakovic makes 26-foot three point jumper
  2. Peja Stojakovic makes 26-foot three point jumper
  3. James Posey makes 23-foot three point jumper
  4. James Posey makes 27-foot three point jumper
  5. Peja Stojakovic makes 25-foot three point jumper
  6. Peja Stojakovic makes 24-foot three point jumper
  7. Peja Stojakovic makes three point jumper
  8. Peja Stojakovic makes 24-foot three point jumper
  9. Rasual Butler makes 25-foot three point jumper
  10. Rasual Butler makes 24-foot three point jumper
  11. James Posey makes 22-foot three point jumper
  12. Rasual Butler makes 25-foot three point jumper
  13. James Posey makes 23-foot three point jumper
  14. Peja Stojakovic makes 25-foot three point jumper
  15. Devin Brown makes 25-foot three point jumper

You think the Raps could get a hand in the face of the shooters, but when NO nails 15 threes, something has gone wrong.

I was trying to think what happened at the last game between these two teams. Then I remember I had come up with a clever headline for the game recap titled "Ring Around the Posey, With a Pocketful of Six Threes." You'd think the Raps would have reviewed that tape.

Anyhow on to the game, Triano had to go with another lineup change tonight with Calderon, Parker, Graham, Bargnani and O'Neal

Chris Bosh was out, Chris Paul was out, Tyson Chandler out, MoPete out and Jose Calderon was back in, so it was going to be an interesting matchup. After a slow, sluggish quarter, theHornets gotan early lead 26-16. The Raps made a run in the second sparked by a Jamario Moon jam. Jose Calderon got it going hitting the jumper to make it a six point game after trailing by as much as 14. The Raptors got hot, went on an 18-5 runas Jose Calderon hit another J to get up by one. Andrea nailed a three to top off the 22-5 run.Calderon had 13 points in the second quarter as Toronto's Zone D caused the New Orleans Hornets to slump.
